Web Site Tools
The following tools are useful in creating a web site such as this one.
Basic Authoring Tools
 | Microsoft FrontPage 2000
or XP (2002)
- FrontPage 2000 is the primary site editing tool used for this web
site. It is a WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) editing tool that
also allows custom HTML and scripting to be used. Its most
useful feature is "Shared Borders", which maintains a common top,
left and bottom edge to each page. This allows the site to have easy
to use, consistent navigation buttons on every page. |
 | Paint Shop Pro 7 -
All images on this site are edited using JASC Paint Shop Pro. This is
a very powerful and easy to use graphics editor. It is both less expensive
and less quirky than Adobe Photoshop, and has all the power that is needed
for creating and modifying web graphics. |
 | Microsoft Word and Excel 2000
or XP (2002)
- Office 2000 much improved web support over previous versions. The
programs now have much improved "Save As Web Page" features that
allow documents (such as meeting minutes and budgets) created in these
programs to be easily saved as pages viewable as part of a web site.
Word and Excel can then reload such pages directly from the web for further
modifications. |
Web Hosting
 | Active-Server.Com is our
hosting service. This site is a "division" of Plateau Ltd. ,
located right across the lake in Sammamish, WA. Active-Server.Com has
"virtual hosting" service that allows a webmaster to host many different web
sites--each with its own domain name with e-mail accounts and e-mail
lists--for a single reasonable price. The server runs Microsoft Windows
2000 Server, with e-mail account and list services provided by IMail
Server software. |
Utilities
 |
FTP Surfer
(Click for free Download) is a very good free FTP utility. The
greatest benefit is that if you double-click on a file which is on the server,
Surfer will automatically download it and open it with the software program you
normally use for that kind of file. For example, if you double-click on a
Word document (.DOC), it will automatically open it in Word. You can then
make changes, save them, and exit out of the program. At that time, FTP Surfer will ask
you if you want to upload the modified version to the server. Just say
Yes. It's that easy! |
 | eFax.Com provides fax handling services
for South Cove. When you send a fax to (425)952-0160, it arrives as an
attachment in the president's e-mail program. It can be forwarded to
other board members by e-mail, and printed out only as needed.
Similarly, any computer document can be sent as a fax without first printing
it out. Though eFax claims to be free, it actually costs $9.99 a month
for the Plus version which allows one to receive faxes via a local
number. In addition, sending a fax with one or several pages typically
costs 10 to 25 cents. |
