SOUTH COVE COMMUNICATOR

October 1999

General Meeting November 10th

The 1999 South Cove general meeting will be held Wednesday, November 10th, 7pm, at the Sunset Elementary School Library.
We want as many homeowners as possible to attend, as we

·       Review the accomplishments of the homeowners association in 1999.

·       Get feedback on future priorities.

·       Approve a budget for the year 2000

·       Elect board members to fill the four vacant positions.

·       Hear a special presentation by Save Lake Sammamish founder Joanna Buehler on lake-friendly living.

Directions to Sunset Elementary:

After leaving South Cove/Meerwood, turn right on W Lake Sammamish Parkway S.E. When you get to the "round-a-bout" - go straight across (180 degrees) to enter the school's parking lot. We have reserved the library.

Get E-Mail

This "South Cove Communicator" Newsletter arrives in your shiny black mailbox several times a year. But, if you send us your e-mail address, you can get updates once or twice a month - including neighborhood announcements, event details, and bulletin board postings. For people with e-mail, everything in this newsletter is already old news!

To get e-mail, just send e-mail to XXX, and mention your name. This list is confidential, and you can tell us to take you off the e-mail list anytime.

Run for the Board

If you'd like to be involved in making South Cove a better place, please run for the board.

We will elect new board members at the general meeting on November 10th - and definitely need help in managing and coordinating the beach, playground, three acre park, special events (Easter, Fourth of July, Garage Sales), etc. that make this neighborhood special. The work is divided among the 9 member board, and only 5 of the current board members are continuing next year. So - we have 4 slots to fill for three year terms.  Contact David Bangs (call 957-9733) with questions or comments about being on the board - or to tell us you'd like to run!

Renewing the Neighborhood

South Cove is 23 years old this month! It isn't a new neighborhood anymore, but we want  to keep it attractive as ever.  Since dues were increased two years ago, the association has been able to save enough money to make some major neighborhood improvements such as the ones listed below. Questions? Come to the general meeting and learn more.

·        Mailboxes -- We have been replacing the neighborhood's 289 mailboxes, and refurbishing the 36 mailbox stands. This project is almost complete. Next: Custom address number labels will be applied to all boxes.

·        Paths --  The worst sections of the asphalt paths in the park will be replaced by Totem Paving this month.  The whole trail system will be capped with new asphalt next spring.

·        Signs - Have you noticed that some of the park entrance signs have broken into many pieces? The top has fallen off the entry monument at S.E. 44th Way. Some signs have accumulated unauthorized carvings over the years, and all look generally bedraggled. We've obtained some bids from sign companies for refurbishing the signs, and for replacing them. After reviewing the options and bids, we've decided to hire "The Sign Source" to replace all 8 of the neighborhood’s entrance, park, and rules signs. The signs will be similar in construction to the existing signs, and we are still considering graphic design proposals.

·        Landscaping - The entrance island at S.E. 44th Way consists of bark and grass which is constantly brown in the summer.  There is no way to water it! We have obtained a new landscape design showing how the entrance can be much improved with rocks and drought-tolerant plants.  We are currently working with landscapers to obtain bids to install such landscaping soon.

·        Bike Rack at the Beach - After receiving feedback that people don't like to lay their bikes on the ground, and don't like the looks of bikes scattered all over the lawn, the board has approved the installation of a pair of low-profile bicycle racks which will hold up to 12 bikes.  The racks are designed to sit so low in the grass that they will be barely visible when not in use.

·        Tennis Court Backboards - The board has long entertained requests to install a practice backboard at the tennis courts. This year, a volunteer (Sandy Ruggles) has stepped forward to obtain neighborhood feedback and bids.  The design so far is to put a single 8 x 24 foot backboard to go on the NE side of the courts. This idea has not yet been approved.

·        Dangerous Cottonwoods? - We've received complaints from homeowners worried that cottonwood trees in the park could fall on their property, or drop limbs in a dangerous fashion.  So far, we have no convincing evidence that these particular trees are a problem - but we have been trying to get an assessment from the county.  Stay tuned.

If you have questions or comments about these projects, come to the general meeting, listen to the reports, and ask questions. In addition, minutes for meetings at which these issues were discussed are posted at www.southcove.net/minutes.htm

Roofing Material Approved

Workers Applying Cedar Shingles to Roof

South Cove covenants have long required that all roofs be constructed of high-quality materials that maintain the appearance and color of weathered cedar shakes. 40-Year Presidential Shake Shingles (Weatherwood Color) from Celotex have been found to meet these requirements.

For a complete description of the current roofing policy visit www.southcove.net/roofs.htm .  Also find here a link to allow you to print an Architecture Review Form.  Those without web access, ask a member of the architecture committee (listed in this newsletter) for assistance.

Keep Dogs On A Leash

Dogs must be kept on a leash, according to South Cove Covenants, and also general King County law. Various homeowners have asked the association to look into the "dog problem".

The association will enforce its covenants, but be aware that the King County Animal Control agency is better equipped to deal with dog problems.  If you contact a member of our Architectural Control Committee about a specific dog problem - please also file a complaint with King County Animal Control, by calling (206)296-7387.  Animal Control asks that you talk to the dog owner to try to resolve the problem, and write down the dates of 6 "trespassing" incidents to establish a chronic problem.

Toddler Play Groups

A play group for 1 and 2yearolds and their mothers meets twice monthly at various South Cove homes. The sessions alternate between Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. so that hopefully everyone may attend at least once a month. To find out more, call Laura Black, 649-5061 or Cheryl Sherburne, 641-6958
