Below is the Board's decision regarding the porta potty proposal. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the South Cove Board via email at board2009@southcove.net

Dear South Cove Homeowners,

This May, a proposal was submitted to the Board regarding the temporary installation of a porta potty in the South Cove park for the summer. Following the submittal of that proposal to the Board, we reviewed the technical merits of the proposal as well as engaged with the community for specific feedback. We received hundreds of comments as well as participation by 61% of the neighborhood in the survey.

We believe that precedents set by previous Boards have demonstrated that the Board must listen carefully to the will of the neighborhood. The Board should act cautiously and carefully on issues regarding common neighborhood property and should not act to move any controversial issue forward without significant support of the neighborhood.

After careful review of the proposal, the Board voted 8-1 to deny the proposal. As such, there will be no porta potty in the park this summer.

The Board believes that there is a fundamental lack of significant neighborhood support to move this proposal forward. After significant effort and outreach, it is clear that there is not a majority of the 289 homes in support of moving ahead with the proposal. The final results of the survey were split evenly at 88 to 88.

Additionally, the Board determined that there is not enough support in the neighborhood to warrant taking this issue to a formal neighborhood vote. We believe that based on the survey responses (comments as well as the survey tally), the neighborhood is not ready for a potty in the park and the Board will not be addressing this issue again this year.

Thank you again to all of those in the community who engaged in this discussion. It highlighted the importance of raising issues and listening to each other in the community.

Finally, we wanted to take some of the time and effort that is now freed up from this issue and put it toward the broader Issaquah community. We will be adopting the Issaquah Food Bank and will use our summer events like the 4th of July and the Concert in the Park to collect food for those less fortunate than us. Please look for more information as these events grow closer.

Thanks again,

The South Cove Board
