Spring Clean
Up Day is Saturday May 10th
submitted 4/25/08 by Shelby Grieve
Back by popular demand! This year’s Spring Clean Up Day will be on Saturday May
10th. Take the day to get your yard ready for summer. Clean the flower beds, mow
the lawn, lay some bark; whatever it needs. If your yard doesn’t need it, help a
neighbor clean up their yard, or contact the Board about cleaning up an area of
our neighborhood.
No room in your trash can? Don’t worry! We’ve increased space to 2 dumpsters
this year. One dumpster will be on 44th Way, and one will be on 192nd, near the
park entrance. This means we’ll need twice as many volunteers. Please contact
Dawn Matte (425-747-0096) or Shelby Grieve (425-644-0909) if you are willing to
volunteer to assist at one of the dumpsters for a couple of hours during the
day.

Special thanks to neighbors Steve and Sonia Wright, owners of Eastside
Hauling & Container Services for the donation of the dumpsters. Contact them
for a neighborhood discount on dumpster rentals: 425-643-4386 |

Important
Park Regulations - No Air/Pellet/BB Guns
submitted 4/20/08 by Editor
Recently, we had an incident in our park involving a
small child getting shot in the eye by a pellet gun. The child is very lucky to
be ok as they were within millimeters of losing sight in their eye. Now is a
good time to remind everyone that pellet guns of any kind are not allowed in the
park. In fact, according to Issaquah municipal code, it is unlawful for any
person to point or shoot an air gun at any person or property of another.
If you see children playing with pellet, BB or air guns in the park, please take
immediate action for the safety of others. If your kids are older and go to the
park unsupervised, or if you live on the park, please make sure you know what
they are doing when at the park and that they know what is and is not
appropriate at the park. Please also be aware that as parents, you can be
charged with assault if your child causes harm to another with this type, or any
type of gun.
The Issaquah Municipal Code regarding air
guns is available

Comcast
Service Credit
submitted 4/6/08 by Dawn Matte
Neighbors who have had Comcast cable TV and who have lived in South Cove
since we were annexed in March 2006 can call Tamar at Comcast at
253-896-3113 to get approximately ½ off their bills for the next six
months. Per Tamar, this is a good will gesture on the part of Comcast
because we have been paying a considerable amount more for our television
service than the rest of Issaquah. Although some people have already been
credited the amount owed to them by Comcast, Comcast says the refund issue
is still pending.

submitted 3/10/08 by South Cove Board
Just a reminder that the mailbox stations are the neighborhood's responsibility
to keep clean. Some of them are looking a bit dirty. Next time you go on a

station. Keeping our mailboxes clean not only enhances our neighborhood, but
also helps the mailbox stations last longer (and your neighbors will thank you).

submitted 2/04/08 by Windsor Lewis-Gloy
When you or your guests park a car on the street, please be sure that all four
tires are on the street. Parking with two wheels up on the curb is damaging to

We our fortunate to live in a neighborhood with wide streets, so please be sure
that all street-parked cars stay on the street and off our sidewalks. Thank you! |

ICE campaign
- "In Case of Emergency"
submitted 11/20/07 by Chad Hardisty
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but
nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest
family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending
us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are
hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an
emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign
The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during
emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the
population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or
persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" (In Case
Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the
scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they
didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good
idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency
situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to
quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as
"ICE".
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2, etc. Be sure it's in
your kid's cell phones also.
A great idea that will make a difference. Let's spread the concept of ICE by
storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today! |

How to
report a street pole outage
submitted 10/13/07 by The Board
Every now and again a street light has an outage, but it's pretty easy to
resolve with the help of Puget Sound Energy.
1. Go out to the broken light pole and write down its number (there
will be a tag on the pole identifying which one it is).
2. Either call Puget Sound Energy at 1-888-225-5773 to report it, or
you can also report the outage via their website at:

Issaquah/South Cove Transportation Needs Study
submitted 6/18/07 by SLSA & Gary Thede
The City of Issaquah has undertaken a
study of West Lake Sammamish Parkway (click
here for the Scope of Work) that will review roadway needs and safety issues
on this road in the South Lake Sammamish area.
Over the next several weeks, the
study consultant, William Popp Associates, will develop a Roadway Needs
(deficiency) Analysis of West Lake Sammamish Parkway as well as preliminary
suggestions on resolutions of identified deficiencies. This data and
report will serve as the basis for a listing and cost analysis of higher
priority, cost-effective projects that could be included in the 2008 Capital
Improvement Program budget that the city is preparing.
To assist in this process, the
city is looking for community input and feedback to provide the Consultant that
can be included in their study and analysis.
All input and suggestions are
welcome, including comments related to how you believe the road can be improved
and identification of traffic safety and operational concerns. If possible, it
is requested that your comments be received by June 18th and can be emailed to
Gary Thede .
As this study progresses, we will
provide periodic updates so SLSA members are kept informed of its progress and
findings. This study should provide a comprehensive analysis of operational and
safety concerns and the creation of a list of projects that will allow for the
planning of needed improvements.
For additional information or if you
have questions related to this study, please feel free to contact Gary Thede at
Gary Thede. |

Keeping Our Sidewalks Clean & Clear
Michelle Forkner, Code Compliance Officer
425-837-3107 –
michelef@ci.issaquah.wa.us
Issaquah City News – Summer 2007 Edition
Issaquah residents love to walk, no matter what the season or weather. They
want sidewalks free and clear of parked vehicles, trash cans, overgrown
vegetation, branches and other possible safety hazards such as moss and
blackberries. Something property owners may not be aware of is that sidewalk
maintenance is the their responsibility per Issaquah Municipal Code (IMC)
Chapter 12.08.030.
Overgrown Shrubs
In our northwest climate, trees and shrubs grow quickly. Overgrown plants and
low hanging branches can lead to head and eye injuries, or can force pedestrians
to sidestep into oncoming traffic. To improve the safety of your sidewalk, be
sure to:
-
Prune trees
to a seven (7) foot vertical clearance
-
Prune one
foot back from the edge of the sidewalk. The extra space allows full use of
the sidewalk space more effectively and safely.
-
Sweep away
fallen leaves and other debris.
-
Trim
vegetation obstructing driveways or intersections to increase visibility of
pedestrians and street signs.
For technical information on how to prune properly, contact Parks Maintenance at
425-837-3661.
Blocked Sidewalks
Blocked sidewalks increase the likelihood of accidents, especially when vehicles
and other obstructions like trash cans or recycling bins [and basketball nets]
force pedestrians into the street. Even partially obstructed sidewalks increase
the likelihood of accidents. Vehicles jutting out of driveways limit sight
distances and decrease room to squeeze by. Sidewalks can crack under the weight
of parked vehicles, leading to expensive repairs not to mention slippery
sidewalks cause by oil leaking from these vehicles.
So check the public sidewalk next to your property. If you see anything
encroaching upon or over it, do your fellow citizens a favor - - clean it, trim
it, sweep it! This will benefit all of us with safe City sidewalks. |

Think Before You Wash That Car
Issaquah City News – Summer 2007 Edition
Do you know where the detergents, oil and road grime from washing your car go?
If you’re not washing your car on your lawn or taking it to a commercial car
wash, chances are the dirty soapy water drains into the nearest storm drain and
directly into Issaquah Creek and Lake Sammamish.
The truth is all soaps, even biodegradable ones, are toxic to fish. Not to
mention everything you just washed off your car. If you’re washing your car at
home wash it on the lawn, where the water will soak into the soil. Or go to a
commercial car wash. The drains in commercial car washes are connected to the
sanitary sewer system, so rinse water does not wash down storm drains.
Do your part to
keep the local creeks and lake clean. Local fish will thank you! |

So You’re Going On Vacation
Chris Felstad, Police Commander

chrisf@ci.issaquah.wa.us
Issaquah City News – Summer 2007 Edition
Safeguarding your
home:
-
Have good
locks on all doors and window and use them.
-
Ask a
neighbor to watch your house while you’re away and provide them with an
emergency contact number.
-
Stop all
deliveries, or arrange for someone to pick up your mail, newspapers and
packages.
-
Use automatic
timers to turn on lights, a radio or a television at appropriate times to
disguise the fact that your are away.
-
Turn the
ringer on your telephone off or down low so anyone outside won’t be alerted
to your absence by a ringing phone.
-
Don’t
announce your absence on answering machine messages.
-
Arrange for
someone to mow your lawn, rake leaves and maintain the yard to give the home
a lived-in look.
-
Ask a
neighbor to occasionally park in your driveway.
Traveling Safely:
-
Use hotel
safes to store your valuables during your stay.
-
Stay alert to
your surroundings.
-
Have specific
directions to your destination.
-
Always keep
your vehicle doors and windows locked.
-
At stop
lights and other traffic delays, leave enough space in front of your vehicle
to provide an escape option in case of emergency.
-
Let someone
know your travel route and itinerary to help authorities locate you if there
is a need to do so.

Doggie Doo-Doo is a Don’t-Don’t
Issaquah City News – Summer 2007 Edition
Half of all dog owners walk their dogs in public places, but about 40% of them
don’t pick up after their pets; creating not only a walking hazard, but
potential health risks as well. Pet waste left on the ground can wash into
storm sewers, many of which drain directly into natural water bodies,
contributing to problems from sick kids [and animals] to mucky algae that
suffocates fish and is sometimes poisonous to humans.
What may seem like such a small amount when it’s just your dog really does add
up. Cleaning up after your pets can be as simple as taking along a plastic bag
on your next walk. The “used” bag can be disposed of safely by securing the bag
and placing it in a nearby trash can. At home, larger volumes of pet waste
should be double-bagged to ensure safe handling by local sanitation workers.
Be a good neighbor and scoop the poop! |

Julie Meyer and her husband Don bought their home in 1990, when you could
still afford a home in South Cove! They have two grown children who attended the
local public schools - Sunset, PLMS, IHS, UW and WWU.
With convenient access to the freeway, a beautiful 3-acre park and
family-oriented community spirit, Julie feels that there isn't a whole lot to be
improved upon in South Cove. She would like to give a little back to the
community she's been a part of for 17 years, help to maintain South Cove's
desirability, and also has a few ideas she would like to implement. |
